On Monday April 8th 2024, Ottawa is expected to experience a partial solar eclipse. Here are several great places to safely view the partial solar eclipse!
In Ottawa, the Moon will start obscuring the Sun at 2:11pm ET, will reach a maximum coverage of a whopping 98% totality at 3:25 pm and finish at 4:35 pm ET.
Solar Eclipse at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum
Date & Time: Monday April 8th from 9am to 5pm

Location: Canada Aviation and Space Museum, 11 Aviation Parkway, Ottawa
Head to the museum to celebrate the partial solar eclipse. Receive free eclipse viewing glasses (while supplies last) with your museum admission and learn all about this celestial event!
Throughout the day they will be offering programming on eclipses and how to view them safely including a make-your-own pinhole viewer. In case of inclement weather, they will stream the eclipse live in their theatre.
Sun-Earth-Moon craft (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Colour and assemble a functional representation of the Earth/Moon/Sun to better understand how these celestial bodies move in relation to each other.
Make Your Own Pinhole Viewer (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Create your own pinhole viewer to view the eclipse indirectly, as it’s projected through the pinhole and onto a piece of cardstock. A great activity for all ages and stages!

Pick up a free pair of eclipse glasses and head outside to the Plaza to watch it.
Eclipse glasses will be provided:
- between 2 pm and 4 pm
- in the Rotunda as you move outside to view the eclipse
- one per person
- free with museum admission
- while supplies last.
